Job Description:

The School of Education at the University at Albany, State University of New York, currently seeks a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Special Education, starting Fall, 2018. The ideal candidate will be able to 1) maintain a successful program of research and publication; 2) teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses with possible online offerings; 3) advise master's and doctoral students; and 4) direct doctoral research and independent studies. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and interest in graduate level teaching, interest in teaching mathematics education courses, and experience in or strong potential for obtaining grants to fund research and programs. Applicants at the Associate level must have an especially strong record of scholarship and external funding.

The appointment will be made in the Division of Special Education, housed within the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, which also includes the Division of Educational Psychology, the Division of Counseling Psychology, and the Division of School Psychology. The faculty members in the Division of Special Education at the University at Albany are a collegial group of scholars representing wide interests in special education who are deeply invested in developing excellent special education teachers. Our collective interests range from interventions for students with autism spectrum disorders, positive behavioral supports for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, literacy interventions in reading and writing for students with disabilities, and teacher preparation. Our TEAC-accredited programs currently focus on learners in grades 1-6 and are highly innovative, collaborative, and feature extensive field-based clinical experiences in both special education and literacy. We produce highly qualified graduates who have strong skills in special education and literacy along with solid backgrounds in evidenced-based instructional practices, technology, assessment, and behavioral interventions.

Job Requirements


Minimum Requirements:

  • Earned Doctorate in Special Education or a relevant discipline from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or internationally recognized accrediting organization by September 1, 2018
  • A strong preparation in special education instruction and research
  • A well-defined research agenda
  • Strong evidence of teaching and research skills
  • A minimum of three years K-12 classroom teaching experience in special education
  • The ability to work with and instruct a culturally diverse population
  • The ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and school personnel
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities
  • Finalists will be required to give a presentation on their program of research.
  • Applicants at the Associate level must have a strong record of scholarship and external funding.
