Job Description

Professor of Communication and Director
of the Annenberg School of Communication
University of Southern California

The University of Southern California invites nominations and applications for the position of Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg School of Communication. Founded in 1971, the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism contains two major academic units: the School of Communication and the School of Journalism. Each has its own faculty and students, while sharing exemplary staff and facilities, abundant resources, and extensive funded research programs. The School has a strong record of innovative program building through interdisciplinary collaboration.

The ideal candidate should be an eminent scholar with the academic credentials to be appointed as Professor of Communication with tenure at a leading research university. We particularly seek scholars who can teach and provide leadership in such areas as new media and technology; political economy of global communication; information, political economy and entertainment; groups, organizations and networks; health communication and social dynamics; media, culture and community; and rhetoric, politics and publics. The ideal candidate will possess the qualifications necessary to assume responsibility for providing leadership in developing the School's evolving mission and long-range strategic plans, serving as Director of the School of Communication. The Director is expected to support the School's broad and varied methodological and disciplinary approaches and serve as a key advocate for the School within the university and at local, national and international levels. The Director should have a compelling vision for the future of communication research, education, practice, and civic engagement and a proven ability to develop and maintain excellent working relations with diverse constituencies, including gender, race, ethnic, and international dimensions. The Director should also have a vision for the School’s ongoing relationship with the global city of Los Angeles. Although most candidates will no doubt come from research universities, candidates from other types of organizations such as foundations, government agencies, and research institutes will also be considered.

The School of Communication is known worldwide for its outstanding faculty, students, research, and teaching, and for contributions to local as well as global communities. The School offers a doctoral and six master's programs, including a joint master's degree program in Global Media and Communication with the London School of Economics, a joint program in Communication Informatics with the Viterbi School of Engineering, and an online master's program that attracts exceptionally talented students from around the world. Its undergraduate program prepares more than 900 gifted students for successful careers in academia, media, business, public service, law, consulting, politics, the arts and entertainment.
