Applied Climatologist/High Plains Regional Climate Center Director

The School of Natural Resources (SNR) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applicants for a High Plains Regional Climate Center Director in Applied Climatology. Depending on qualifications and interests of the successful candidate, an academic appointment as a faculty member is possible. This position shall also have appointments in research and teaching, and will be expected to lead and coordinate a nationally and internationally recognized research and education program in applied climatology. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program that complements existing strengths of HPRCC and climate faculty in SNR.

The successful candidate’s research and educational program will establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations; connect with stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners; effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for program activities; mentor graduate students; publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals; and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities.

The candidate will also coordinate and lead the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC); provide leadership for program development; participate in the formulation and conduct of HPRCC research programs; supervise and evaluate the work of HPRCC faculty and staff; administer budgets; represent the HPRCC to UNL administration, as well as to U.S. congressional representatives, federal (i.e. NOAA, USDA), national, state, and tribal organizations. In addition, the candidate is expected to oversee the HPRCC’s partnerships with Extension and Extension Issue Teams on multidisciplinary initiatives that contribute to the SNR and IANR missions. The candidate will be expected to average .30 FTE as determined by the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources (CASNR) Academic Appointment Guidelines, and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in applied climatology or other areas.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in a relevant field of study (e.g., climatology, meteorology, geography) or closely related field, ten or more years of relevant experience including the PhD, a strong record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and generating grant funding in support of research. Effective written and oral communication skills with students, professionals, and the general public.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Relevant experience beyond the PhD in climate services; active in regional activities and networks; able to work with diverse organizations; and experience working in team environments.
